Language Learning

Location

Lima, Peru

Date

2002 - February 2014

I grew up in Lima, Peru until the age of 12. Their primary language is Spanish, and native language is Quechua - I had the opportunity to live in a household where both languages were spoken, one from my grandparents and the other one from my mother. Being in Peru has definitely provided me with a different perspective in the world I live in now - their way of living, common interest, culture, and day-to-day lifestyles are completely different. For example, Peruvians have a strong emphasis on family and community ties, with extended family often living close by or together and consumption of traditional foods like ceviche, anticuchos, and quinoa is common, reflecting the rich culinary heritage. I was able to see both sides of the coin when it came to government policies for the community and even the education system in both countries. Before moving to the United States, I learned Peruvians often see the United States as an economic powerhouse with significant cultural influence, admiring its opportunities and advancements. As someone who left the country early in their teenage years and was able to experience first-hand the opportunities provided to those who work hard and have goals to achieve, I understood many of these perspectives had some truth in them, but not fully.

My time in Peru taught me to love and leave an impact in every project I was part of during school and community, which later turned out to be an interest in philanthropy, especially in the education sector of the country. My experience back in my home country has allowed me to add the International Studies major with the emphasis in Latin America and the Caribbean. I hope in the near future to get more heavily involved with the Peruvian government where I not only get to contribute in nonprofit work but innovate the education system that is placed in the country.
